Taking place during the resulting thirty-year way, the book places an emphasis on the incredible feats of women who fought alongside men during the way, which includes being on the front lines while heavily pregnant. Even after the battle for independence is over, the women fighters face another struggle--women's rights and gender equality.

The Fate Of Unborn ChildThe fascinating accounts are based on the long Eritrean struggle for freedom and independence. The main protagonists are Berhane and Yodit, the star-crossed lovers whose emotional discourses are so captivating as each chapter unfolds in continuum. However, it is Genet who is the most versatile protagonist as an actor, participant observer and confidante of the twos. Also, it is assumed that she is the real author in disguise.
Unfortunately, the love that flourished in this once romantic metropolis: Asmara, disrupts all of a sudden due to mass murder and imprisonment perpetuated by the Derg killing squad. Hence, Berhane decides to join the Liberation Front by confiding Yodit as the moving message denotes:-
“No citizen can sleep peacefully at night in any part of the country. This is the reality of our country, until there is a time when we can stand on both of our feet proudly without fear, a time where we can quench our thirst for our love, and a land to ensure all of these; I will seek that land first.” (Page 47)
With these last words, Berhane offers his darling a necklace as a token of their love memory. However, what happens later with the necklace, dramatizes the turning point of her adventurous life.
Not long, Yodit following the arrest of her two brothers joins the Front, and meets her lover, Berhane. Genet describes their dilemma and conflict with sympathetic understanding as long as a passionate love amid endless war is concerned. The role of Genet as a crisis resolution agent by way of her persuasive and linguistic skills is remarkable indeed.
At the heart of matter, Genet insists time and again, the desire of combatants to leave at least one child behind who carries their enduring legacy: martyrdom. However, the women fighters including Yodit prove their heroism even to the point of concealing their pregnancies in the battlefield. It is a double martyrdom indeed with countless unborn babies who remain nameless and faceless. May the world know the fate of the forgotten little souls who could not defend themselves.
Furthermore, Genet specifies at length the daily life of the combatants never recorded in the annals of Eritrean history. This could be due to decent freedom fighters who are uncomfortable to talk about their heroic act. Even so, some with foresight suggest her to write their stories in case she lives to see the Liberation Day.
If for Russians “War and Peace” is highly esteemed novel, and so is this master piece “Of War and Love” for living and incoming generation Eritreans. With this in mind, every concerned Eritrean or else must possess it as a collectible edition of all time.

I bought this book out of curiosity but I found it be one of the best books I ever read. Actually I can honestly say this is the best book I read so far.
One of the great things about this book is the way the author developed the characters. Each person has a definite personality. The Fate of the unborn child is a great book by far.The story is very interesting and keeps you on the edge of your seat, the characters were masterfully written so that you felt their aches, their doubts and their successes in each chapter. Author Nigisty, has given readers a historical true story of what these people put their life through for the sake of their county. Your heart breaks, you cheer and you hold your breath until you turn blue as you race to finish reading this book and the characters are strange and interesting enough to make you want to know more about what will happen to them next. Out of five stars, I would give this book five stars.
